We’ve all been there…tearing our hair out and wandering around aimlessly thinking of things to do, as you’re stuck inside due to bad weather.
However, fear not, as you will find some fantastic events and indoor activities in Yorkshire, which are open all year round. Helping you keep the adventure going no matter what the weather outside.
At Addplant, we always have a plan B up our sleeve, and in this post, we share some of our favourite rainy-day activities.
Activities in Yorkshire on Rainy Days
White Scar Cave – one of the most beautiful natural wonders, this is a great rainy-day activity-based inside the Yorkshire Dales National Park. Filled with waterfalls, stalagmites, and stalactites, you can take part in one of the longest cave tours in Britain at White Scar. Squeezing into tight spaces and playing games in and out of the many echoing chambers.
Jorvik Viking Centre – The Jorvik Viking Centre has something for everyone! Delving into the illustrious history and heritage of the Vikings, you can take a ride through the remains of old settlements, admiring characters, exhibits and even smells. The centre will also wow you with excavated artefacts that have been found under the museum itself!
York Dungeons – one of the most popular attractions in York, the dungeons are renowned for providing the gore and the ghoulish side of history. Great for a dismal day, York dungeons can teach you about famous characters from the past, as well as prepare you for coming face to face with haunted pubs, and gruesome guests. The age limit to visit the dungeons is 8+ and for those looking to visit the dungeons after hours and kid–free, be prepared for a tour that combines “booze with boos”!
Stump Cross Caverns – avoid those rainy days with caverns and cake at Stump Cross Caverns. With a warren of walkways and chambers for you to explore at your leisure, make sure to check out the limestone formations, underground streams and the cosy café for good food and a warm cuppa!
National Railway Museum – An indoor attraction which brings to life the story of Britain’s railways. See first-hand how technology has changed the railways with awe-inspiring full-size trains on display, retro signs, and nostalgia galore. If you want to make your experience complete, why not opt for afternoon tea inside one of the restored rail carriages? Oh, and we’d definitely recommend taking a walk through the only Japanese bullet train as well as having your picture taken at the Flying Scotsman.
Eureka! – For a fun-filled family packed day, Eureka in West Yorkshire is the place to visit. With six different zones and hundreds of interactive exhibits, let everyone burn off some energy and let imaginations run wild. With hands-on activities and a children’s museum included, be prepared to spend the whole day exploring and playing at Eureka.
Xscape – We love it here! Yes, we realise we probably sound like big kids, but Xscape has everything. From a gravity trampoline park, snozone indoor ski slopes, ten pin bowling, laser zone, 4D cinema, glow in the dark golf, and a soft play centre – to name just a few! What’s more, to answer the “I’m hungry” questions, you will also find a TGI Fridays, Pizza Express, and Nando’s…. now can you see why we like it so much?
Tropical World Leeds – Meet some of Yorkshires wildest residents at the indoor wildlife park, Tropical World. With snakes, creepy crawlies, crocodiles, piranhas, and monkeys as residents, you can travel through deserts, rainforests, and mangroves on the hunt for bats, armadillos, meerkats, and more. An excellent activity for all animal adventurers.
Wensleydale Creamery – Now we couldn’t forget to mention the best of Yorkshire – the Wensleydale Cheese. Step inside their glorious world through the Wensleydale museum doors. Providing you with the ultimate cheese experience, you will be taking through the art of cheese making and the ingredients, and craft that goes into the cheese. All before you get to taste its creaminess. (Because let’s face it, it wouldn’t be a real experience if you didn’t get to taste the final product!)
Sheffield Winter Gardens – An indoor attraction that can be enjoyed no matter what the weather outside. A 22-metre arcing greenhouse that provides a complete city–centre oasis. Showcasing over 2,500 different types of plants from all over the world, the Winter Gardens offer a peaceful escape from it all.
